Yonah Zur Violin/Viola
An avid chamber musician, Yonah Zur regularly appears throughout Israel and the US. Since returning to Israel with his family last summer, he has joined the ranks of the Israel Camerata, and the faculty of the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance and it’s Conservatory (pre-college program).
Bewteen 2008-2010 Yonah was a fellow of the ACADEMY—a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, the Weill Music Institute, and in collaboration with the NYC Board of Education. Recent North American engagements have included performances at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Town Hall, and Merkin Hall in New York, the Gardner in Boston, Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, Smithsonian in DC, and appearances in LA, Phoenix, and Toronto. He was invited to participate at the Marlboro, Yellow Barn, and Tanglewood music festivals, as well as the Cité de la Musique in Paris and throughout his native Israel. He was a member of New York Philomusica, String Orchestra of New York City, and a founding member of Fountain Ensemble.
Chamber music collaborators have included Richard Goode, Gilbert Kalish, Samuel Rhodes, Marcy Rosen, David Soyer, and Arnold Steinhardt. Yonah has appeared as soloist with chamber orchestras in New York (Town Hall), Los Angeles, and throughout Israel.
A strong advocate of new music, Yonah has given world premieres of works by Kaija Saariaho, Claudio Spies, Lukas Foss, and by his father, composer Menachem Zur, as well as many US premieres including works by Elliot Carter and Mrs. Saariaho. He was a regular guest with the major NY new music ensembles, and he was a member of the New Fromm Players at Tanglewood —a group created solely for the performance of new music—in it’s inaugural of summer of 2002.
Yonah received his Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School in May 2001, having studied with Robert Mann. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in 1999 from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance having studied with Avi Abramovich, while serving three years in the Israeli Army as a member of the unit for outstanding musicians.
Yonah was a regular recipient of the America-Israel Cultural Foundation scholarship awards from 1995 through 2003.
Yonah joined the Meitar Ensemble in 2011.
